Today (August 25) is the deadline to cash in Facebook’s privacy settlement.
Facebook’s parent company, Meta, agreed to pay $725 million to settle a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of sharing user data or making it accessible to third parties without users’ permission.
The settlement stems from multiple lawsuits that were brought against Facebook by users who claimed that the company improperly shared their data. The lawsuits were filed by users who used Facebook in the United States between May 2007 and December 2022. The settlement administrator set up a claims website where users can apply to claim their share of the settlement.
The deadline to apply for the settlement is Friday, August 25. Users who are eligible for the settlement will be awarded one “point” for each month they used Facebook during the specified time period, up to a maximum of 60 points.
Longtime Facebook users stand to get more money from the settlement.
